Lonising radiation has a wide range of applications in medicine and industry that deliver enormous benefits to societies throughout the world. The regulation of practices using ionising radiation and the degree to which safety standards are implemented vary from country to country. This existing infrastructure for regulating ionising radiation can be used as the foundation for the legal and institutional frameworks for the safe use of nuclear power in a country embarking upon a nuclear power programme.
